Eight families were displaced by a two-alarm turned three-alarm fire in Elkton following a blaze that broke out on the deck of the dwelling late on Friday afternoon.

The long night for members of the Singerly Fire Company and surrounding agencies began shortly before 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the 200 block of Main Street, when a fire was reported by occupants of the home.

A team of dozens of firefighters were able to initially get the fire under control, but were called back at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning when the fire rekindled and it was upgraded to three alarms.

According to the Maryland Fire Marshal, the blaze was the result of improperly discarded smoking material.

The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

Thirteen people were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
